Termite Prevention Tips Sydney

Every homeowner’s worst nightmare is “you have termites”.

But what are somethings you can do around your home that can help reduce the risk factor of termites setting up home in your humble abode?

I have been researching on different ways that the average homeowner can prevent the risk of termites entering their home.

Unfortunately for homeowners insurance companies do not pay out claims for termite damage.

It is recommended by Australian standards to have a termite inspection yearly and if in a bushy area to have every six months.

So what are somethings you can do around your home to reduce the risk factor of termites.

  • Reduce humidity in your subfloor by installing a cross flow ventilation fan.
  • Go around your property and remove any timber landscaping post.
  • Remove timbers in subfloor.
  • Fix any leaking pipes in and around your home.
  • Remove any wood chippings in your landscaping area.
  • If you have a section for firewood or untreated timber I highly recommend that the firewood and untreated timber be removed from your premises.
  • Divert any water sources away from your home.
  • Have a day where you do some pruning of bushes and heavy foliage.
  • Get a ladder and check your gutters and remove any debris that maybe in your gutters.
  • Remove any dead stumps or trees from your premises.
  • Make sure that water overflow pipes and air-conditioning pipes are directed away from your home.
  • Seal any cracks and crevices in and around your home.
  • Remove any moisture in and around your home.
  • Replace or repair any damage shingles, fascia and soffits.
  • Do mini inspection and check for any changes in and around your home.

If you have found out that you indeed have termites please do not disturb them as  by disturbing the termites will cause the termites to move to another location in your home making it harder for the termite technician to ascertain how bad the termite infestation is in your home.

Natural ways to keep ants out of your kitchen.

There are so many different species of ants and when they decide that your kitchen is their new home what are you going to do.

Ants are robust and programmed to source out food to bring back to their nest so they can feed the queen ant.

Unfortunately ants don’t discriminate and will go to homes that are clean.

Whether you have ants that are scattered or in straight lines here are some natural ways to get rid of ants?

  • Herbs such as mint, basil, thyme, lavender and rosemary are a natural deterrent as ants cannot stand the smell. Place the bouquet of herbs around doors and window frames.
  • Place cucumbers directly in the ant’s path as it will deter ants out of the kitchen.
  • Ants love eating cornmeal but unfortunately once they consume the cornmeal they will not be able to digest it and will eventually end up exploding.
  • Cayenne pepper, salt, cinnamon, baby powder, chilli powder and coffee grounds make great deterrents. All you need to do is place one of the above in lines and the ants will not be able to cross the lines.
  • Dilute 3 parts of vinegar and 2 parts of water in a spray bottle and start spraying those pesky little buggers.
  • Check and cracks and crevices and seal them up so there is no entry point that the ants can get through.
  • Break up little pieces of soap and mix it with water, place around entry points. There is a component that is in the soap that poisons the ants.
  • Make sure that you wipe all surfaces and mop all floors.

Bed bugs and how to avoid bed bugs hitchhiking their way back to your home

When you think of bed bugs you think gee they must go to the nastiest of homes but that is not true.

Bed bugs will hitchhike in your bags and luggage when you have stayed overnight in a hotel or someone who may have had an outbreak of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are a nocturnal parasite which feeds on the blood of their host. A typical feed for bed bugs usually will last between two to five minutes.

Bed bugs can travel around 100 feet each night and will often spread by cracks, crevices, pipes, under doorways and being transported through luggage, bedding, mattresses and clothing.

Like German cockroaches bed bugs breed at a rapid rate often infesting a room within just two weeks.

So what are somethings you can do in order not to bring these blood sucking parasites home with you the next time you sleep out of your home.

  • Check the room that you are staying in, lift up the bed to see if there is any bed bugs along the seams, blood marks, dark excrements, check drawers and wardrobes.
  • Travel lightly. Don’t over pack as when you have too many bags and items this will be a perfect hiding ground for bed bugs.
  • Never put your luggage directly on the bed, couch or floor. These days most hotels have a luggage stand or you can use the bench tops or tables to open your luggage. Always put your luggage up high as bed bugs tend to stay closer to the ground.
  • If you are lucky to have a dryer in your room pop all of your clothes even the ones that you didn’t wear into the dryer for around an hour.
  • Never pick up couches, mattresses and other upholstered items from the side of the road as this could potentially have bed bugs and other pests.
  • When you return home unpack your luggage in the laundry and wash everything in eucalyptus oil that you have taken with you then place in the dryer once finished. Do not leave the washed clothes in the laundry take them and put them away immediately.

The cold hard truth about cockroaches and can it cause Asthma

Whether we like it or not cockroaches at some point will enter our premises and set up their cosy little living space.

Not many people realise that cockroaches can actually cause asthma.

Decomposing cockroaches, saliva, faeces and urine from cockroaches has just enough organisms for us to breathe into our bronchial tubes. With some people this can cause an allergic reaction that is also known as asthma.

Not everyone who has cockroaches in their home will develop asthma. Usually the people who are affected are people who are more sensitive in their bronchial tubes.

Unfortunately as the weather is getting warmer and warmer this makes the perfect breeding ground for cockroaches.

Cockroaches are a nocturnal insect and will often come creeping out in search for food at night and will scatter away once the light has been turned on.

Cockroaches is not just limited to causing asthma but they can also create other health issues which can make you severely sick or can cause death.

The cold hard truth about cockroaches and can it cause Asthma
The cold hard truth about cockroaches and can it cause Asthma

Studies have been done and while German cockroaches are on the top of the list for causing asthma this does not exclude the larger cockroaches.

German cockroaches will breed every five to six weeks and will have between forty to fifty baby cockroaches in each egg sack.

Large cockroaches have less than the German cockroaches with around 15 baby cockroaches.

So what can you do to avoid an infestation of cockroaches?

  • After every meal clean up and wipe bench tops down
  • Sweep, vacuum and mop floors daily
  • Remove any clutter in and around your home
  • Store all food in airtight containers
  • Clean out your pantry on a regular basis as crumbs can often fall on the shelves
  • Fix any cracks and crevices around your home
  • At the end of the day pack your pets bowl away so there is no food source
  • After shopping check bags and boxes for cockroaches or their egg sacks
  • Check your kids backpacks when they come home from school or when staying out over night
  • Fix any leaky pipes in and around your home
  • Also take the rubbish out each night

As a business owner we all know the stress that comes with owing a business.

The last thing that is on our minds after a 15 hour day is pest and the havoc that they can cause.

In an ideal world we would love for pests to disappear rather than multiply.

What is our responsibility when it comes to pest control in a food premises?

As soon as you see any pest in your food business you must always contact a trusted pest controller who will provide you with not only a pest service which eliminates pest but also provides an appropriate pest management program.

It is by Australian standards that anyone in the food sector is to not only be trained in safe food handling but also must be on a pest management program which controls the threshold level of pests that enter your premises.

So you have this beautiful restaurant with beautiful food in a great part town but one thing is lurking over your head. The dreaded rat runs over your customers table with a loud screech there is sudden uproar in your restaurant with customers all scrambling around in panic.

Not only are you going to suffer from income loss from customers not dining at your restaurant but you could potentially unintentionally poison your customers from the faeces and urine that rats and cockroaches leave behind.

These days the council is pretty much going to each and every food premises often surprising food business owners with inspections for pest and cleanliness. If you are one of these food premises you could leave yourself wide open for hefty fines, prosecution and being place on the NSW Food Authority Website where everyone has access to see anyone who has been fined.

Food operators must also know that going with the cheapest quote will not always mean that your pest issues will be handled correctly and efficiently.

Pest Control Interview

What do you love most about your job?

I really love having a chat with our clients, hearing about what pest they have and educating our clients on the life cycle of each pest.

What do you dislike about your job?

The only thing I would say that I dislike about my job is hearing that their previous pest controller didn’t do their job correctly. I really hate hearing our clients upset and angry.

What is a funny storey that you have heard since working at Redline Pest Control?

Oh gee there is quite a few funny stories but my favourite would have to be Mrs Allan a widower from Parramatta who fell asleep watching tv with a bar of chocolate next to her. When Mrs Allan woke up she glanced down and saw a mouse nibbling on her chocolate she had such an awful fright that she had flung the mouse up in the air along with the chocolate and went darting into the other room.

What is your favourite pest?

Oh I would have to say the peacock spider the way it moves and the amazing colours that come from these little spiders is amazing.

What is your least favourite pest?

Ground dwelling spiders would have to be my least favourite. Something about them that creeps me right out.

If you have one word to described Redline Pest Control what would it be?

I can only chose one word now that is hard as we stand for so much but I would have to say reliable. Can I still say the rest?

If you could change one thing in the pest industry what would it be?

I would regulate the pest industry, there is too many cowboys out there trying to make a quick dollar from unsuspecting clients. It truly breaks my heart when I hear that our clients have been ripped off and still experiencing pests.

Bird lice is a blood sucking parasite which are usually found on birds like chickens, pigeons, starlings and sparrows. Bird lice is also known as bird mites and from the insect order of Phthiraptera.

Fortunately for us bird lice do not carry any diseases.

At some point in our lives we will have birds roosting in our eaves and roof voids and will get bird lice from time to time.

Bird lice is just as much a pest as fleas and can create problems not only for your pet birds but can leave you seriously itching when the bird lice attach themselves on to you.

Bird lice will inject their saliva into their host skin causing severe irritation of resulting in rashes and scratching like a mad man.

Bird lice have a yellowish to greenish body but once fed will turn a reddish colour. Bird lice has eight legs for adults and six legs for immature bird lice. Bird lice are roughly 0.5 to 1.0mm in length. Bird lice have a life span about 7 days but can breed rapidly with the eggs hatching after three days.

Bird lice will usually breed in the warmer months from Spring to Summer.

Bird lice will go in search of new birds or their nest if their host has died or left their nest.

What is bird lice and how do we get bird lice? Treatment for bird lice.
