Termites have a specific role in their colony and are separated into three groups:

Reproductives

  • Queen – can live up to 50 years and pump out millions of baby termites. She will never leave the colony
  • King – his job is to fertilise the queen and will not leave the colony except at the start of the colony
  • Alates – will form their wings and when the perfect conditions arise they will leave the colony to form new colonies. This is usually when the humidity is just right

Soldiers – they are the front line when it comes to an attack of some sought.

Workers – will carry out all work which is needed such as building the colony and will distribute food.

There are three groups that classify termites.
  • Subterranean – will usually build their colony underground, under patios and base of trees. Will build mud leads and underground tunnels.
  • Dampwood – will usually build their colonies in timber landscaping, damp subfloors or damp wood.
  • Drywood – will usually be found in tropical climates, will nest in drywood and does not need ground contact.

• Mix 1 part baking soda and 1 part icing sugar together and place in shallow lids or saucers. While the icing sugar will bring the ants to one place the baking soda will kill the ants.
• Citrus spray. When you peel a lemon, orange or other citrus keep the skin and put in a pot with 3 cups of water and 2 cup of vinegar and keep it on a low setting for around half an hour. Let the mixture set over night and pour into a spray bottle for the next time those pesky Ants decide that your kitchen is the place to be.
• Essential oils are great if you find the right one that works. Tea tree oil, peppermint oil and citrus oil works a treat. Rub the skirting boards near windows and door frames, the side of counters and benchtops. Not only does this make your home smell gorgeous it will also deter Ants away.
• Vinegar spray is also a great way to get rid of ants, all you need is a cloth vinegar and water. 1 part water to 1 part white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray away and wipe the surface not only will it get rid of your Ants but you are also cleaning naturally.
• Chalk and flour, draw or sprinkle lines around entry points in and around your home as Ants will not cross the line, for the chalk there is a component called calcium carbonate which is seashells grounded up and will repel not only Ants but other pest like slugs and snails.
