Pest Control Sydney – What are Bed bugs?

Growing up my mother always use to kiss me goodnight and say to me “goodnight don’t let the bedbugs bit” now back then I truly thought bed bugs were these mythical bugs that climb into bed if we were being naughty.

These days I now know that bed bugs are not mythical but a true bug that feeds on the human blood.

Bed bugs known by scientific name Cimex Lectularius need a human host to feed on otherwise they won’t survive.

Bedbugs are a brownish red colour and are roughly four to six mm long, adults will have wing pads but does not have the ability to fly, the wing pads help them jump from place to place. Bedbugs mouthparts are designed to pierce the skin and feed on their host, they have long antennae, with six legs and clawed feet for them to easily climb over objects.

The life cycle for a bedbug!

For every female bed bug, you have she can lay up to 12 eggs a day, that is up to 500 eggs per her lifetime.

Eggs are the shape and size of a tiny grain of white rice but being translucent makes it hard to see the eggs.

The female bed bug will burrow her eggs in the cracks and crevices she can find so they will survive.

Once the eggs have been deposited in the cracks and crevices they will hatch roughly 10 days later, once this happen they will be now known as Nymphs.

With nymph bed bugs, they will have five stages they go through which are called instars.

The first instar is translucent then will turn in to a creamy colour then as they progress they will turn into a more darkish colour.

The nymph bed bug  cycle can take up to eight weeks and will develop their wing pads around the last month or so.

Adult bed bugs can live to around six months in the perfect environment and here is something even scarier bed bugs can live to around two months without feeding on a host.

Unfortunately, bed bugs do not discriminate and will go to the cleanest of homes as their only source of food is a blood meal from a host.

But how do we get bed bugs?

Usually when you travel or pick up second hand furniture or clothes they can hitchhike a ride and set up residency in your home.

They start off in the room that you place the items you have bought home then over time with the bed bugs jumping from place to place other rooms can then also be affected.

Here are some signs of infestation!

• excrement – blood or faecal spotting on mattresses and linen.
• live or dead bed bugs and cast skins in surrounding areas and on mattresses and linen.
• bed bug eggs on mattresses and linen. Also in cracks and crevices.
• distinctive odour in the rooms affected.

What are some hints for me to do before a pest controller comes out?

• Grab a flashlight and go around and check along the mattress seams, cracks, and crevices in and around the bed, skirting boards, behind dressers, paintings, windowsills, and any other furniture you may have in that room.
• You will need to vacuum all areas of the affected room including the mattress. Once finished empty the vacuum bag into a plastic bag and dispose of it in your outside bin ( this is vital). You need to vacuum several times over the next few days or so.
• Do a good clean on your room and remove any clutter that bed bugs may hide in.
• Clean out your wardrobe, dresser and bedside tables as bed bugs love to hide in furniture too. With the clothes that you have removed from this furniture wash those in hot water with eucalyptus oil than put these clothes in a tumble dryer to dry. If you don’t have a tumble dryer you can put them on the clothesline. Once dry put in large plastic bags and put in a sunny spot or you can even freeze these items for 20 minutes to an hour.
• Grab bedding and curtains and wash them with eucalyptus oil.
• If you have a steam cleaner please steam all cracks and crevices around the affected room as this will help moisten the eggs from being stuck to the fibres.
• If you can put your mattress outside in the sun for 2 – 4 hours. (it must be a 30 degree plus day for this to be effective)
• Wipe down all surfaces in the affected room with eucalyptus oil diluted with water, we have also found that lavender and tea tree oil also works a treat.

What should you look for when hiring a pest control company?

What should you look for when hiring a pest control company?
What should you look for when hiring a pest control company?

What should you look for when hiring a pest control company?

When it comes to looking for a pest company or any tradesman to come to your home it is vital to always do your research on that company before coming out to your home.

Now I know I might be a little anal but do we really know who is coming through our doors, trusting them to provide the correct service or let alone our trusted valuables?

Unfortunately the pest control industry isn’t regulated and there are many cowboys that makes it hard for those companies who have set the industry standards high.

When researching a pest control company what should you look for?

When I use a tradesman I google that company, searching for reviews across the web seeing if they have positive or negative reviews. When reading reviews this helps me determine if the company in question is reputable and will provide the service that is right for me.

Go through their website and get a feel for what the company stands for by reading their mission, vision and values statement and any other information that they may have on their website. Do they have a section on their website that has the list of chemicals that they use? This will usually be under the MSDS section of their website.

What should you ask the person that you intend to hire?

So you have done your research now it is time for the phone call to see if their services are the right services for you.

What sort of questions should you ask the customer service agent?

  • Are you fully insured if something should go wrong?
  • What is your warranty period?
  • Do you hold the relevant qualifications for safe handling of chemicals?
  • Does your pest technician do refresher courses so they keep up to date with not only pest bio but safe handling of chemicals?
  • Are you a registered business?
  • How long does a treatment last?
  • How long will it take to spray my home?
  • Do you implement the integrated pest management system?
  • Is your chemicals safe for my family, pets and the environment?
  • What is the payment method?
  • What sets you apart from other pest companies? (I like to ask this question to hear what tradesman have to say)
  • What is involved in the treatment?
  • What pest are included in my treatment?
  • Will the chemical kill my vegetable garden or plants?
  • What do I need to do to prepare for pest control?
  • How often should I get pest control/termite inspections done on my home?
  • When will I start seeing results from my service?
  • What is the difference in a common cockroach and a German cockroach?
  • What is the difference of webbing spiders and ground dwelling spiders?
  • What if it rains on the day of the treatment?

When calling the pest control company that you have chosen your customer service agent should ask you questions regarding the pest in your home. The customer service agent should listen without interrupting you and identify pest over the phone such a bio of that pest and how an infestation can get out of control. Recommend a treatment plan that is right for your premises.

If you are just getting quotes for pest treatments ask them to send you via email the quote so you can compare what pest service you are getting and what is involved in the pest service.

Sometimes going with the cheaper pest company can end up costing you more in the long run so make sure that you really do your research on the company you choose.

Bed bugs and how to avoid bed bugs hitchhiking their way back to your home

When you think of bed bugs you think gee they must go to the nastiest of homes but that is not true.

Bed bugs will hitchhike in your bags and luggage when you have stayed overnight in a hotel or someone who may have had an outbreak of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are a nocturnal parasite which feeds on the blood of their host. A typical feed for bed bugs usually will last between two to five minutes.

Bed bugs can travel around 100 feet each night and will often spread by cracks, crevices, pipes, under doorways and being transported through luggage, bedding, mattresses and clothing.

Like German cockroaches bed bugs breed at a rapid rate often infesting a room within just two weeks.

So what are somethings you can do in order not to bring these blood sucking parasites home with you the next time you sleep out of your home.

  • Check the room that you are staying in, lift up the bed to see if there is any bed bugs along the seams, blood marks, dark excrements, check drawers and wardrobes.
  • Travel lightly. Don’t over pack as when you have too many bags and items this will be a perfect hiding ground for bed bugs.
  • Never put your luggage directly on the bed, couch or floor. These days most hotels have a luggage stand or you can use the bench tops or tables to open your luggage. Always put your luggage up high as bed bugs tend to stay closer to the ground.
  • If you are lucky to have a dryer in your room pop all of your clothes even the ones that you didn’t wear into the dryer for around an hour.
  • Never pick up couches, mattresses and other upholstered items from the side of the road as this could potentially have bed bugs and other pests.
  • When you return home unpack your luggage in the laundry and wash everything in eucalyptus oil that you have taken with you then place in the dryer once finished. Do not leave the washed clothes in the laundry take them and put them away immediately.

Pest Control Interview

What do you love most about your job?

I really love having a chat with our clients, hearing about what pest they have and educating our clients on the life cycle of each pest.

What do you dislike about your job?

The only thing I would say that I dislike about my job is hearing that their previous pest controller didn’t do their job correctly. I really hate hearing our clients upset and angry.

What is a funny storey that you have heard since working at Redline Pest Control?

Oh gee there is quite a few funny stories but my favourite would have to be Mrs Allan a widower from Parramatta who fell asleep watching tv with a bar of chocolate next to her. When Mrs Allan woke up she glanced down and saw a mouse nibbling on her chocolate she had such an awful fright that she had flung the mouse up in the air along with the chocolate and went darting into the other room.

What is your favourite pest?

Oh I would have to say the peacock spider the way it moves and the amazing colours that come from these little spiders is amazing.

What is your least favourite pest?

Ground dwelling spiders would have to be my least favourite. Something about them that creeps me right out.

If you have one word to described Redline Pest Control what would it be?

I can only chose one word now that is hard as we stand for so much but I would have to say reliable. Can I still say the rest?

If you could change one thing in the pest industry what would it be?

I would regulate the pest industry, there is too many cowboys out there trying to make a quick dollar from unsuspecting clients. It truly breaks my heart when I hear that our clients have been ripped off and still experiencing pests.

Pest Control Interview

When did you become interested in pest control?

I became interested in pest control when I had an outbreak of German cockroaches in my house, I had called a pest controller and when he had turned up I was asking his questions of what his day to day tasks were. Once he left I looked into how I could get into pest control and from that day on I fell in love with helping my customers get rid of their pest and termites.

What makes your day interesting?

Defiantly the customers I meet, I have met some interesting people who makes me laugh with stories they have told me.  I remember one customer who told me that he had a mouse that he couldn’t catch and was really frustrated, he fell asleep on the lounge with chocolate next to him and when he woke up the mouse was eating the chocolate and the mouse had scared him.

What motivates you?

My motivation is helping my customers with their pest and termite issues that they have.

What sets you apart from other pest controllers?

I will always listen to the customer’s needs and wants and go out of my way to make sure that the customer is informed on what pest treatment they are having and how to avoid an infestation occurring, providing the customer with support during and after the treatment has been carried out.

Who is your targeted audience?

I would say that my targeted audience is both residential and commercial property market.

What is the most common complaint you hear from customers?

I always hear horror stories from customers who have had pest controllers come in and will spray a few areas and will be in and out within 15 minutes and they still have pest crawling around their home or place of business.

What are three positive things a customer would say about your work ethics?

My customers will say that I am honest, reliable and I get the job done right the first time.

What makes a good pest technician and how do we know that we are getting the treatment that we pay for?

Yes sure there are companies in the pest industry who will do almost anything to get you to go with them but what are they offering and will they fix the issue at hand.

Don’t be scared or intimidated when it comes to choosing the right pest controller. What I always recommend is jump on to Google and see what reviews are being posted about the company that you have in mind in Pest Control Sydney.

Redline Pest Control goes above and beyond to make sure each client is informed of how the treatment works, the threshold of pest which is at the clients home or business and will eliminate any pest which you may have.

It is unfortunate that there is several pop up companies who will advertise very cheap then will either disappear, provide no warranty or even worse they will not fix your pest issue forcing you to call another company and lay out more of your hard earned money.

Redline Pest Control is Sydney’s leading pest control company offering clients a 6 month warranty on most pest  services they provide.

So what sets Redline Pest Control apart from other pest control companies?

Each technician which is employed by Redline Pest Control goes through extensive training workshops not only to help them understand the biology of pest and their thresholds but to listen to what the client is saying in regards to their pest issue. (We have heard many horror stories where pest technicians have gone into client’s homes or businesses and not listen to what was the issue at hand and done a completely different treatment).

Field technicians are not the only one who goes through training, each staff member in the office will also commence training on pest and termites. Imagine if you call a company and the office admins have no idea what you are talking about, you will be very disappointed and will call the next person which is listed in Google.

Redline Pest Control will always have a solution for any pest that arises in your home whether we advise you on how you can eliminate them on your own or by recommending a treatment that is right for your pest issues. (I don’t know of many companies that will let you know that there is a do it yourself treatment).

A good pest control company in Sydney will always make themselves available to their clients by providing an after hours phone number for any questions they may have of their past service, upcoming service or emergencies.

No, once the chemical dries it will not affect humans or pets what so ever. We use non toxic chemicals.

I have pets, what should I do with them?

If you have a dog ask a neighbour or friend to look after it for around one hour or take the dog on a walk for an hour. If you have birds, reptiles or fish put a large damp sheet around their enclosures. If you have a cat the cat will usually go hide somewhere in the neighbours yard, if your cat is an indoor cat you will need to take your cat somewhere for an hour.

Do I need to prepare my home for pest control?

Yes, Redline Pest Control ask each of our customers to do the following:

• Do your weekly clean
• Put all plates, cups, utensils and pots and pans away
• Put all food away in appropriate places
• If you could move furniture away from the walls so we have access to your skirting boards, if furniture is to heavy don’t worry about trying to move it as we don’t want you to hurt yourself.
• If you have clothes on the clothesline please remove them
• If you have pet bowls please empty them and put them away

When will I start seeing results from the pest control?

When is a good time to have pest control on my home and how often should I get pest control?

Redline Pest Control does pest control all year round, we usually say to our customers to have a general pest treatment once a year. Sometimes depending on your location you may need pest control every 6 months or so. A lot of our customers do get pest control done around spring time once it starts to warm up.

How often should I have a Termite Inspection done on my home?

Redline Pest Control recommends that every home should have a Termite Inspection done every 12 months and every 6 months if you live in an area which has a lot of trees and bushes.

How long does a Termite Inspection take?

Every home is different and therefore the time will vary from home to home but we do ask our customers to leave around a 2 hour period for us to perform the Termite Inspection. Larger homes can take up to 3 to 4 hours depending on size.

Do I get a report for my Termite Inspection?

Yes, each property that has a Termite Inspection receives a comprehensive report which is either handed on the day or emailed over to you within 48 hours of having the Termite Inspection done.

I have had a Rodent Treatment, will I see dead rats or mice in my home?

It is really hard to say as each treatment is different. Around 9 out of 10 rodents do die outside as they go searching for a water source as the bait we use has a thinning agent in it causing the rodents to become dehydrated. There is that 1% that a rodent does die inside, this is due to your home having a water source. If the rodents do die the bait we use coagulates their blood and you may smell an odour for around 24 to 48 hours.

Will the bait used for Rodent Treatments affect my kids or pets?

No, we strategically place baits where children and pets cannot get to. For any rodent treatments which are outside or in certain parts of your home where bait needs to be applied we have lockable bait stations which children and pets cannot get into.

What if it rains the day of my treatment?

If it is raining the day of your treatment you will receive a call from one of our customer service representatives to advise you that we need to reschedule your appointment. If you are having a rodent treatment or German cockroach treatment only the service will still go ahead. If it rains an hour after we have done the treatment we will organise a time to come out and re spray the external areas of your home. Anything over an hour you need not worry as the chemical has already set it.

Do you offer same day Pest Services?

Yes, depending on availability on that day. It is best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Do you have a warranty on Pest Control?

Yes, we offer a 6 month warranty on most pests and depending on the level of infestation. To get a better idea on warranty speak to one of our customer service representatives.

How can we pay you for the Pest Service?

Redline Pest Control takes all major credit cards and cash on the day of treatment.
