Autumn pest control what you need to know!

Autumn pest control what you need to know!

Autumn pest control what you need to know!
Autumn pest control what you need to know!

With autumn just a few days away what does that mean for pests entering your humble abode and how can you reduce the risk of pests entering your home?

Now is the time to protect your home with a long-lasting pest preventative treatment to keep those pesky pests away.

With pest it can be some time that you notice that there is an infestation as we slide into the cooler months pest to are looking for a nice warm spot to call their home and unfortunately that means our home is now theirs if we don’t get on top of it now.

Redline Pest Control always recommends our clients to go in and around their homes and look out for any gaping holes, cracks and crevices and seal them up, so pests have a much harder time entering your home.

Any over hanging branches will need to be cut so pests such as roof rats won’t be able to make your roof void their playground.

Autumns common pests!

When we think about pests we often think pests only come in the warmer months but in reality that is not true as pests are looking for shelter so they survive the cooler months and what is most annoying thing is that it is our homes that pests love to enter.

  • German cockroaches
  • Rodents – rats or mice
  • Termites
  • Spiders
  • Ants
  • Bed bugs
  • Birds

Where do pests love to live?

  • Termites – love to feast on wooden structures in and around your home
  • Garages
  • Roof voids
  • Subfloors
  • Pipes and drains
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Storage rooms
  • Bedrooms
  • Bin areas
  • Clutter and boxes

Prevention is better than cure!

Redline Pest Control recommends preventative pest control to our clients which means get on top of it before it gets on top of you.

Kill pests before they get a chance to breed, therefore making infestations harder to get a hold of.

After your pest treatment has been carried out, what will happen and what should you do?

We often get calls from our clients stating that they are still seeing some pest activity after two weeks.

This is perfectly normal as we use a slow release chemical that allows the pests to come in contact with the chemical but once they do the chemical will attack their nervous system and they will die off, we ask our clients to wait six weeks and if they are still seeing an influx of pests then to give us a quick call where we can discuss what would be the next step to take.

For spider treatments we will advise you to leave the webs there for roughly seven days then knock the webs down that way we know that we are getting a hold of the spiders as they love to hide when a treatment has been carried out.

With ants they will need to take the chemical back to the nest so the queen can digest the bait once this happens you will notice that that they will die off but then spew out as the queen has died and there is no queen to give them signals to forage for food or defend their colony. Once they spew out and come in contact with the chemical they will die.

Why is it so important to have pest control done in food courts in shopping centres?

With high traffic areas like food courts in shopping centres it is highly important to carryout pest control to protect the health and safety of consumers who sit down to eat their meal.

Like us, pests love to eat and will jump at any opportunity to snap up the crumbs left behind.

Imagine taking a bite into what you bought to eat and a cockroach or a rat scurries past, what would you do? How would you react? Would you still eat the food that you bought?

By implementing an effective pest control maintenance program, you are ensuring the health and safety of each person that visits your food court.

It is your legal requirement to make sure that pest control takes all practicable measures to prevent pests and or vermin from entering a food premises.

Unfortunately, pest can cost you a great sum of money by

  • Contaminating food when pest and or vermin eat stock
  • Eating through electrical appliances, fixtures and fittings
  • Making consumers and staff sick
  • Loss of reputation
  • Fines by NSW food authority
  • Legal cases when a consumer of staff member has been sick
  • Named and shamed on the food authority website

What are some pests that can cause damage or make staff and consumers sick?

  • All species of cockroaches
  • Rodents
  • Stored pests
  • Ants
  • Flies
  • Birds

Where do pests love to hide?

Unless there is a high infestation of pests they will generally come out once the food court has been shut down for the night.

When you are seeing pests in the day that usually means that there is a very high infestation of pests and therefore you will be required to have pest control immediately to control and prevent pests and their life cycles.

  • Behind equipment
  • Under washing facilities
  • Behind electrical equipment
  • Cooking appliances
  • Heating and or air-conditioning units
  • Boxes and storage areas
  • Cracks and crevices
  • Wall cavities
  • Roof voids
  • Bin areas and or dumpsters

What are some practicable measures to prevent pests entering your food court?

  • Implementing a strict cleaning program
  • Seal any cracks, crevices and gaps
  • Installing any flyscreens to doors or windows
  • Installing weather strips, insect flying units, bird deterrents and door airflow systems
  • Food stored in appropriate storage containers
  • Remove all boxes, clutter any anything else that pests can hide in
  • Maintain clean cooking equipment such as stoves and benchtops
  • Removal of rubbish each day
  • If not using a cooking utensil or machinery put away

Christmas Beetles on the decline

Christmas Beetles on the decline

Christmas Beetles on the decline
Christmas Beetles on the decline

Growing up in the 80s and 90s there was an abundance of Christmas Beetles each year.

I remember on many occasions my brother and myself having competitions on who could catch the most Christmas beetles, needless to say my little brother would always win as he would forage for hours looking for the christmas beetles.

So why don’t we see Christmas Beetles like we use to when we were younger.

According to the daily telegraph Christmas Beetles are declining because of climate change.

Over the last four springs the climate has been somewhat dry and warm which means that with the ground being so hard the Christmas Beetle larvae is unable to crawl its way out from underneath the soil and therefore resulting in them being defenceless underneath the soil and dying.

Another major factor of the Christmas Beetle being on the decline is the removal of the eucalyptus trees as this is their main source of their food diet.

The larvae needs to be able to come up through the soil so they can reproduce and carry on their legacy.

Something I didn’t know was that according to records that about a century ago the Christmas Beetle was evident in Darling Harbour that they were actually called the Darling Harbour Beetle and that there was such an abundance of them that the tree branches use to hang in the water due to the branches being so heavy with Christmas Beetles.

So if you happen to see these little beauties please don’t step on them or kill them rather pick one up and inspect them, see what they look like, see their tiny robust bodies, let your kids pick them up and investigate.

Ticks Sydney Pest Control

With Ticks in Sydney and around the world, ticks are blood sucking parasites which feed on the blood of humans and pets.

With over 800 species worldwide and with roughly 70 species here in Australia it is reported that this summer ticks in Sydney are on the rise and breeding rapidly.

Ticks have four pairs of legs, their head, body and thorax are fused together and is an orangey browny colour. Nymphs have only three pairs of legs.

With the male ticks they have a plate which covers their entire body and the female only has half a plate covering their body.

With the lifecycle of a tick there are four development stages it will go through, egg, larvae, nymph and adult.

In order for a female tick to survive she must have a host to feed on as this is fundamental in passing from stage to stage in their life and to produce eggs.

Tick eggs will only be laid in moist surroundings and with a single female she can produce over 3000 eggs which will hatch between 40 to 60 days.

Once the eggs have hatch they then become into larvae and will be referred to as seed ticks and is anywhere from 1 – 2 mm long. Once the larvae mature a little bit their skin will harden and will be able to start climbing onto things that will give them the opportunity to attach themselves to a native host which is an animal. (this is only for the larvae stage of life)

Larvae usually will feed anywhere from 4 to 6 days on their host after their feed they will then detach themselves from their host and will transform into a nymph.

Nymphs will spend time in a moist environment for up to 40 days before finding a new host to feed on.

Nymphs are roughly between 2 to 5 mm and will feed for up to 7 days on their new host until they detach themselves where they will moult for a final time before it becomes an adult.

Once the nymph has matured in to an adult tick they will usually be around 5 to 6 mm in length and will reattach themselves on to their host for a feed and once they have engorged for up to 20 days the tick will become globular and will reach up to 10mm in length.

There are two classifications of ticks which are soft ticks and hard ticks.

Soft ticks are from the family order of Argasidae are not that common and will rarely come in contacts with humans. They have a leathery winkled appearance.

Hard ticks are from the family order of Xodidae and are very common in attaching themselves to humans. They have short elongated mouth pieces with a row of teeth which points backwards, they have a hard-flat body.

What are signs of a tick bite?

If you have been bitten by a tick, symptoms usually start to appear within 3-7 days.

  • Death may be caused by respiratory failure or heart failure.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Pupils become dilated and look sick.
  • Discharge from your eyes.
  • Vomiting, grunting and wheezing can be present.
  • Become paralysed.

How can you reduce the risk of ticks around your home in Sydney?

  • Like possums bandicoots are a protective species and if you have bandicoots you will need to get someone who will be able to catch and release the bandicoot to an alternate location.
  • Go around your home and do a total lawn care makeover, mow lawns regularly, prune trees, bushes and foliage.
  • Scan you pets every few days to make sure that they haven’t picked up any ticks. (if you do find ticks on your pets please take them to the vet as sometimes when pulling them out you can break them off causing the poison to be still in your pet.
  • Call a trusted pest control company in Sydney where they will blanket spray not only your lawn but hedges, garden beds, shrubs, bushy areas on your premises for ticks in Sydney.

Dead carcasses and the blow fly!

pest pic

Monday I had a frantic call from a concerned client saying there was an unusual amount of blow flies swarming in her home and she didn’t know where they were coming from.

I asked her the usual questions like can she smell something decaying, was there any meat left out, does she have pets as maybe it is the food that they might not of eaten, to check to see if there was any animals on her property that may of passed. Nothing I asked was occurring so I asked one of our technicians to do an emergency job to investigate why this customer has blow flies in her home.

John arrived at the client’s home in Parramatta and searched the lawns, subfloor, and interior and made his way up to the roof void where he instantly smelled a decaying matter. Upon further investigations of the roof void he had found dead rodents in the roof void.

John removed two dead rodents but was unable to get the third rodent as it had slipped into the wall cavity. John advised the customer that he was putting the odour eliminating bag in the roof void and that it will suck up any bad smells that was in the roof void.

Our client had used a different pest controller to do a rodent treatment and when she had tried to call that pest controller he no longer had his phone in service.

Usually when pest controllers bait for rodents they will use bait that has a thinning agent in it so it coagulates the blood stopping it from releasing a bad smell.

Unfortunately for our client the bait that was used was a stock standard bait that you could get from the local hardware house which doesn’t have this thinning agent in it.

Needless to say our client was so happy that the blow flies have since disappeared and that we have found the source of the issue.
