For light infestations you can kill fleas naturally.

So what are somethings you can do to get rid of these annoying little blood sucking parasites.

  • Place salt or bicarb soda on the carpet as this will make it hard for the fleas to gain momentum and jump around. It will also dry out flea eggs which have not been vacuumed up.
  • Vacuuming all areas of your premises and then taking the vacuum outside and empty the contents into the rubbish bin.
  • Wash all pet bedding and if your pet sleeps into the bed with you also wash your bedding.
  • Once bedding has been washed place into a tumble dryer or leave in the sun.
  • If you have a dehumidifier place it in the affected rooms so it dries out any moisture as fleas love moisture.
  • Giving your beloved pet a bath with tea tree oil or soft shampoo will see the fleas jump off your pet and into the bath.
  • Making your own flea collar for your dogs is a great way to keep fleas away. All you need is your dogs collar some tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil or citronella oil. Rub the oil along the inside and outside of the collar and wait for it to dry. ( warning you do need to dilute the oils to 1 part oils 9 parts water. You need less than 1% of oils)
  • Grab a shallow dish and put some washing detergent in the dish add water. The fleas will be able to jump in but will be unable to jump out due to the slimy texture of it. This will cause the fleas to die.

Repeat vacuuming and cleaning every day until fleas have disappeared.

So what are fleas and how can we get rid of fleas?

Fleas are tiny parasites which will feed on a blood host whether it will be your pet or yourself.

Fleas are a reddish to brownish in colour with a flat body with no wings, they gain momentum by flicking themselves up or across with their three pairs of legs. Fleas have sclerites which is hard like plates across their body. To the naked eye this seems smooth but in fact the plates overlap each other.  This makes killing fleas by hand once you catch it a little harder, you will need to squeeze the flea in a certain spot with your nails.
