Dragonflies Sydney

DSCN2155_wm - Copy

What is a dragonfly and are they dangerous?

Dragonflies are an insect which belongs to the family of Odonata suborder Anisoptera.  Dragonflies have elongated bodies with two very strong transparent wings with multifaceted eyes. Dragonflies can range in all sorts of colours.

Dragonflies are not dangerous at all even though they eat the prey they catch.

Dragonflies a voracious eaters and will continue eating if there is a flow in food.

DSCN2154_wm

If you mishandle dragonflies they can turn around and leave a nasty bite but the bite will not inject any poison which is harmful to humans.

Dragonflies have impeccable sight just like flies do. Dragonflies have multifaceted eyes with over 30,000 individual facets and each facets creates their own image which is very fascinating if you really think about it.

Unlike most other insects dragonflies do not court their mates. The male dragonfly will forcefully mate with the female dragonfly and even though the male has male anatomy he doesn’t actually use that instead injecting his semen via his segment at the end of his body.

Wolf Spider found in Sydney

Last week I was outside playing with our dog and kids when I noticed these really big holes in my lawn. Naturally I was curious to know what made these holes. Upon closer inspection I found out that the holes actually had wolf spiders in them. Yelling out to the kids to take the dog and themselves inside while I frantically called one of our technicians to come out and treat our lawns for wolf spiders.

So what is a wolf spider and where do they live?

Wolf spiders are a ground dwelling spider and will make burrows in your lawn or garden bedding. Wolf spiders are also known as wanders and will often go wandering throughout the night in search of a mating partner or a new home. Although wolf spiders are not poisonous as such it can lead to a nasty bite. If you are allergic to their venom it is highly recommended that you seek medical attention straight away.

What is involved in a wolf spider treatment?

Firstly the Redline Pest Control technician that comes out to your  home will inspect all areas both at the front and the back checking for any holes that may be on your lawns or garden bedding, the will check all areas that are very leafy and if you have wood debris on your property. As the technician is inspecting what he has found he will then spot treat those holes as he moves onto the next hole. Once the technician has spot treated the affected areas he will then blanket spray the lawns for any holes that may have been missed or for wolf spiders that may have escaped the spot treating.

As wolf spiders are a ground dwelling spider it is difficult to eradicate as your neighbours could possibly have these spiders on their lawns and could potentially reinfest your lawns if they don’t treat their lawns.

Internal Areas:

Bait will be placed in roof void if you are hearing noises, bait will be placed in cardboard bait stations and will be placed strategically behind furniture, fridges, washing machines, dryers and any other places that rodents will frequent.

When we bait outside for rodents we always try to look for places that the bait in cardboard bait stations can be strategically placed. If there is no place that the bait can be placed we will advise you that you will need to purchase lockable bait stations which is yours to keep and the best thing is they are reusable and all you need to do if you have a rodent issue again is to replenish the lockable bait station.

What is a huntsman spider and what do they look like?

Why do they call a Huntsman spider the Huntsman? Does they mean that they will hunt me down in the corner of my room?

No, a Huntsman spider is from the Heteropodidae family and is known for the way they hunt their prey such as small invertebrates and other insects. They immobilise their prey with their fangs and will suck the juices out of the prey.

So what does a Huntsman Spider look like?

There is over 94 species of Huntsman Spiders. Huntsman Spiders have a big flat body with eight hairy legs and eight beaming eyes, they are also known as a crab spider. If you look closely you will see beautiful markings on this spider (yes I know that I am somewhat strange when I talk about how beautiful spiders are).Huntsman can be brown to grey, orange to brown or brown to pink with stripes on the bottom of their abdomen. The male Huntsman spider is much smaller than the female with it being roughly 16cm and the female being roughly 20cm.

Where do Huntsman Spiders live?

You will find the Huntsman spider across Australia, they do not build webs or have burrows, you are more than likely to see them under bark, logs, tree stumps, rocks and cracks and crevices. At times you will find the Huntsman spider high up on your walls near the ceiling.

Are Huntsman spiders aggressive?

There is a two part answer to this question as it is a no and a yes. Most Huntsman spiders will quickly run away once you have disturbed them but if a female Huntsman is guarding her eggs she will be more than likely to attack you. While Huntsman spiders are not poisonous they do pack a mighty bite and can cause nausea, swelling and sweating.
