Bed bugs and how to avoid bed bugs hitchhiking their way back to your home

When you think of bed bugs you think gee they must go to the nastiest of homes but that is not true.

Bed bugs will hitchhike in your bags and luggage when you have stayed overnight in a hotel or someone who may have had an outbreak of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are a nocturnal parasite which feeds on the blood of their host. A typical feed for bed bugs usually will last between two to five minutes.

Bed bugs can travel around 100 feet each night and will often spread by cracks, crevices, pipes, under doorways and being transported through luggage, bedding, mattresses and clothing.

Like German cockroaches bed bugs breed at a rapid rate often infesting a room within just two weeks.

So what are somethings you can do in order not to bring these blood sucking parasites home with you the next time you sleep out of your home.

  • Check the room that you are staying in, lift up the bed to see if there is any bed bugs along the seams, blood marks, dark excrements, check drawers and wardrobes.
  • Travel lightly. Don’t over pack as when you have too many bags and items this will be a perfect hiding ground for bed bugs.
  • Never put your luggage directly on the bed, couch or floor. These days most hotels have a luggage stand or you can use the bench tops or tables to open your luggage. Always put your luggage up high as bed bugs tend to stay closer to the ground.
  • If you are lucky to have a dryer in your room pop all of your clothes even the ones that you didn’t wear into the dryer for around an hour.
  • Never pick up couches, mattresses and other upholstered items from the side of the road as this could potentially have bed bugs and other pests.
  • When you return home unpack your luggage in the laundry and wash everything in eucalyptus oil that you have taken with you then place in the dryer once finished. Do not leave the washed clothes in the laundry take them and put them away immediately.

Interview With George From Redline Pest Control

Pest Control Interview

When did you become interested in pest control?

I became interested in pest control when I had an outbreak of German cockroaches in my house, I had called a pest controller and when he had turned up I was asking his questions of what his day to day tasks were. Once he left I looked into how I could get into pest control and from that day on I fell in love with helping my customers get rid of their pest and termites.

What makes your day interesting?

Defiantly the customers I meet, I have met some interesting people who makes me laugh with stories they have told me.  I remember one customer who told me that he had a mouse that he couldn’t catch and was really frustrated, he fell asleep on the lounge with chocolate next to him and when he woke up the mouse was eating the chocolate and the mouse had scared him.

What motivates you?

My motivation is helping my customers with their pest and termite issues that they have.

What sets you apart from other pest controllers?

I will always listen to the customer’s needs and wants and go out of my way to make sure that the customer is informed on what pest treatment they are having and how to avoid an infestation occurring, providing the customer with support during and after the treatment has been carried out.

Who is your targeted audience?

I would say that my targeted audience is both residential and commercial property market.

What is the most common complaint you hear from customers?

I always hear horror stories from customers who have had pest controllers come in and will spray a few areas and will be in and out within 15 minutes and they still have pest crawling around their home or place of business.

What are three positive things a customer would say about your work ethics?

My customers will say that I am honest, reliable and I get the job done right the first time.

  • Grab a flash light and check along the mattress seams, cracks and crevices in and around the bed, skirting boards, behind dressers, paintings, windowsills and any other furniture.

  • Vacuum all areas of the affected room including the mattress. Once finished empty the vacuum bag into a plastic bag and dispose of it in your outside bin. You need to vacuum several times over the next week or so.

  • Do a good clean on your room and remove any clutter that bed bugs may hide in.

  • Clean out your wardrobe, dresser and bedside tables as bed bugs love to hide in furniture too. With the clothes that you have removed from this furniture wash those in hot water with eucalyptus oil than put these clothes in a tumble dryer to dry. If you don’t have a tumble dryer you can put them on the clothes line. Once dry put in large plastic bags and put in a sunny spot or you can even freeze these items for 20 minutes to an hour.

  • Steam clean all cracks and crevices around the affected room.

  • If you can put your mattress outside in the sun for 2 – 4 hours. (it must be a 30 degree plus day for this to be effective)

  • Wipe down all surfaces in the affected room with eucalyptus oil diluted with water.

Avoid any water source you may have by regularly changing your pets water, or draining the water from your sink, fix any water leaks you may have in or around your home.
HOME MAINTENANCE Regular cleaning of your home goes a long way. Pests thrive on dust, food scraps and crumbs. Regular vacuuming and dusting of furniture will help control pest by eliminating their food source. Clean up clutter in your home as this is a good place for them to hide and breed.LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE By regularly mowing your lawn, sweeping falling leaves and branches, cutting back branches which overhang your roof, pruning your bushes and over grown plants you will help eliminate pests from entering your home.

Bed Bugs and how to get rid of them

We have all heard the term “sleep tight and don’t let those Bed Bugs bite” for some people that is exactly what happens when falling asleep.

So you have had a restless night tossing and turning as your flesh is been bitten. For those who have been bitten we know that those bites are painful and itch like crazy.

Bed Bugs feed on their host’s blood at night time while they are asleep as they are nocturnal. Fortunately for us humans Bed Bugs do not transmit any diseases. Once your room has Bed Bugs it can be tough to get rid of those pesky little buggers. Bed Bugs can live over 600 days without a blood meal and can reproduce over 10,000 offspring in their life time. Bed Bugs have an amazing sense of smell and will crawl out of their hiding spaces once they smell the presence of blood.

Bed Bugs hate the heat as it speeds up their life span causing them to die so they go in search of new hiding spaces.

Bed Bugs love a dusty and unkempt room and usually thrive on these conditions. We need to educate ourselves on the importance of hygiene and how we can prevent an infestation occurring.

Redline Pest Control uses the integrated pest management program when dealing with Bed Bugs.

Bed Bugs and how to get rid of them.

Redline Pest Control will ask that customers wash all their Fabrics, sheets and clothes in hot water than put in a tumble dryer, if you don’t have a dryer hang on clothesline before we get there, that way the room is ready for the treatment to begin.

What do we do when we inspect for Bed Bugs? Well we grab our UV flashlight and comb over mattresses cracks and crevices, bed frame cracks and crevices, bed skirtings, curtains, carpet, rugs, furniture, pillows, bedside tables, tall boys, dresser drawers, power points, window frames, door hinges, behind picture frames which are hung on the walls, alarm clocks and any other electrical products.

Redline Pest Control will spray and wipe down all surfaces, IE, tall boys, bedside tables, window frames and sills. We have a steamer and we steam every inch of the affected room/s, we add a special chemical which is designed to eliminate Bed Bugs to our steamers. We also ask the customer to vacuum once we leave and 14 days after the treatment has been carried-out.
