Bees Bees Bees!

RSCN1944_wm

Over the last few days I have been inundated with emails and frantic calls from clients who have had an influx of bees nesting in wall cavities and swarming around their home.

While bees are not harmful to some they can be deadly to others.

So why is there is an influx of bees right now?

Most Bees will hibernate over the winter season and will awaken in spring as flowers start to bloom and with flowers come pollen and nectar which bees thrive off.

Bees have been known to be seen in winter if the weather is warm enough.

So you have bees what is the next step?

Firstly don’t ever disturb them as by disturbing them can lead to several bees coming after you or a love one and trust me you don’t want to be stung by multiple bees.

Call a professional pest technician who knows what they are talking about and will know how to get rid of bees in a swift and non-harmful way.

I had a call from a real estate company that we deal with on a constant basis and one of their landlords had received a quote and went with that quote to eradicate bees he had on a rental property he owns. Though the price was very cheap which he thought was great unfortunately the company he had hired to come out did not eradicate the bees properly and provided no warranty.

Any good pest technician will always provide a three month warranty for bees to their clients.

Sometimes when dealing with pest that can be harmful cheap is not the way to go. You want to hire someone who is confident and will guarantee their work after all your life could potentially be at risk.

Bees don’t always create their hives on trees and awnings. Bees can nestle in between wall cavities and roof voids. Bees will gain entry via eaves and between brick work on the other foundations on your home.

With the current weather becomes increasingly hot out comes those annoying pest that we all loathe.

I usually get pest control done at the end of spring closer to weather but I had found that over the past few days I had a large increase of large cockroaches and bees swarming around my house.

Anyone that knows me knows that I generally don’t have an issue with pest except pest that can contaminate my food and could potentially sting me.

Spiders don’t really bother me as much as I find spiders so fascinating with the way they spin their webs and the amazing patterned colours that each spider has.

Bees and wasps may be great from an ecological point of view but what dangers can they bring when they have set up their hives in or around your home. For most of a simple bee or wasps sting will only cause small irritation but for others this could very will send them to the emergency department or even worse cause death.

Now is the time to prune those trees and bushy areas, clean up around the kiddies play equipment and keep the lawns cut short.

Why do we always advise customers to keep their lawns short and their yards neat and tidy?

Redline Pest Control believes that in order to reduce pest thresholds it is vital to know what is going on in and around your premises. Say for instance that you have long grass, snakes and ground dwelling spiders will be in all their glory as it is the perfect breeding ground for them to breed and feed without being detected. Yesterday walking back to my car from doing a quick grocery shop I noticed a single bee flying around and landed on the bonnet of my car.

I got super excited and whipped out my phone to take a photo of the bee.

With all the warm weather we have been having for the last week I knew that with seeing this single bee that meant that we are in for some more good weather and that spring may just hit early this year.

There are over 1,500 species of bees which are in Australia today.

When do Bees swarm?

Bees generally will swarm between September to December as this is when the abundance of nectar and pollen is in the air.

On warm sunny days bees will usually swarm between 10am to 3pm each day in search for nectar and pollen.

Is it true that bees can make their new home in my wall cavity?

Yes, believe it or not we get calls from customers who have had bees in their wall cavity and roof voids.

Last year we had Jenny from Penrith call us as she had bees in her wall cavity. Jenny had called another pest control company who came out and told her he had fixed the problem. When Jenny called the pest control company back they said that they had not been out to her property. Jenny did a quick google search on bee control Penrith and found our company. Our technician advised her on how the treatment works and kept her informed every step of the way. A few days later Jenny called us back squealing with delight as we had eradicated the bees for her. You see Jenny is allergic to bees and if stung by a bee she could either get sick or potentially die.

Can bees cause damage to my premises if found in my wall cavity or roof void?

Yes, bees can cause damage to the following:

  • Bee hives when in your wall cavity can reduce air ventilation due to blocking vents.
  • The pressure of a bee hive in your wall cavity can cause your gyprock to swell and your paint to bubble.
  • Bee hives can actually increase the activity of ants at your premises as their honey is an attractant.
  • Electrical faults can occur if the bee hive is wrapped around electrical wires.
  • Installation in your roof void can be damaged if the bee hive is severe.
